Community Involvement at Emmanuel
Emmanuel was originally established as a ‘missional’ church in 1909. Through the years we have been very involved in many aspects of the West Central Neighborhood. We continue to support many good causes nationally and internationally through the Presbyterian Church (USA) through their special offerings. We devote most of our attention to causes helping others in the West Central neighborhood, and Spokane in general. The groups listed below are ones that we regularly support.
Audubon Elementary School
Emmanuel Presbyterian has partnered with nearby Audubon Elementary School for many years. We collect and donate school supplies in September, help stock their emergency clothing bank, including a sock drive in the fall, and we coordinate with the school counselor to provide Thanksgiving dinner for several families in November and Christmas dinner to another set of families, along with Christmas gifts for selected students and their families. We also fill a “Mitten, Hat, and Glove Tree,” and deliver these in winter to the school to help keep the children warm.
Every fifth Friday of the month the Presbyterian Women of the Congregation furnish dinner for the kids at Crosswalk, an outreach organization of the Volunteers of America, who serve homeless and at-risk youth in downtown Spokane. We also collect and donate various toiletry articles, which are very much appreciated. If you’re cleaning out your travel bag and have extra soaps and shampoo’s we’d be happy to pass them on for you!
Westminster Food Bank
Located at Westminster Presbyterian Church in the West Central neighborhood, this food bank, along with Second Harvest has been providing nutritious food for their neighbors since the mid 1960’s. We collect and donate food and funds to support this important mission each month.
Our Place Community Ministries
Emmanuel supports this ministry to the residents of the West Central neighborhood with donations of household goods, clothing, and funds. They provide valuable services to those with the greatest needs in the West Central Neighborhood. We are a Sponsoring Church on the Our Place board. Cannon Pool Pass Fund
Emmanuel has partnered with the West Central Community Center youth director to provide daily swim passes to Cannon Pool in the summer months. They ensure that children with the greatest need get to enjoy this fun experience that for many of them is out of the reach of the family budget. We have provided over 11,790 single youth day passes since 2009.
