The New Year - Epiphany
We start the new year at Emmanuel with a party, complete with lunch, games, and horns. Following shortly after the new year is Epiphany, the celebration of the Magi meeting Christ, giving their gifts to the newborn Lord.
The season of Lent begins with a celebration of Ash Wednesday, service of ashes. The 40 days of this somber season are finished up with the celebrations of Holy Week. Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.
Easter is the celebration of the Risen Christ. It is a time for celebration! We weave beautiful fresh flowers into a wooden cross that is then shared with our neighbors.
Spring Salad Luncheon
Later in Spring the Parish Life and Missions and Social Concerns Committees host the annual Spring Salad Luncheon. It is a wonderful potluck, no one leaves hungry, and a good time is had by all! The $5 suggested donation goes into the Cannon Pool Swim Pass Fund for our youth in the West Central neighborhood.
Pentecost is the Christian celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus after his Ascension, and is held on the seventh Sunday after Easter.
At Emmanuel we celebrate the Church’s seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, as well as Epiphany, Pentecost, and Trinity. Trinity Sunday always occurs eight weeks after Easter, and initiates the longest season of the Church year. This season lasts until the first Sunday of Lent, over half the calendar year. The word Trinity comes from the Latin tria, three, and unis, one, which preserves the “three -in-one” notion intended by the ecumenical councils of the 4th century that expressed the Trinitarian doctrine in their creeds.
We celebrate the season of summer with a special Sundae Sunday coffee hour, usually toward the end of July, early August. Vanilla ice cream, a variety of toppings, and whip cream. It’s a nice way to beat the summer heat!
Mid-summer we kick off our annual school supply drive for the students at Audubon Elementary School. These new supplies offer many children the opportunity to begin the school year with new supplies, backpacks, and classroom supplies for the teachers. These are dedicated and presented to Audubon staff at our annual Back to School Luncheon in early September. Lunch is prepared by our very own “school lunch ladies”, and is always a fun time.
World Communion Sunday - Peacemaking Offering
Emmanuel joins with other churches throughout the world the first Sunday in October in celebration of World Communion Sunday. It is also the day we receive our Peace and Global Witness Offering, a PC(USA) special offering which is used to help bring peace to peoples of the world through Christ. Emmanuel’s portion of this offering is used to assist those in need in our West Central neighborhood. This is also the start of our annual sock drive to benefit those served by Our Place Community Ministries and the children of Audubon Elementary School.
Early November we have a Harvest Luncheon to celebrate the fall season, and also the end of our “Sock Drive.” We collect new socks during October and into November that are donated to Our Place Community Ministries, and Audubon Elementary School. These are simple items that mean a lot to those in need.
The season of Advent is a happy one at Emmanuel. It is a special time to celebrate the birth of Christ. The Presbyterian Women of the Congregation host a special Christmas Coffee Hour one Sunday in thanks for the support they have received during the past year from the congregation. Mid-December we also receive the Christmas Joy Offering, a PC(USA) special offering that provides financial assistance to current and former church workers, ministers, and their families, or provides opportunities for deserving students to attend Presbyterian-related racial ethnic colleges and schools. We hold a traditional Christmas Eve candlelight communion service December 24 at 7p.m. and all are welcome!
